The Friends of Sherwood Arboretum
The Friends of Sherwood Arboretum Association Inc. (FOSA) is a not-for-profit, voluntary community association, which has worked in partnership with Brisbane City Council since 1986. We offer ‘hands-on’ help for the Arboretum and also advocate for better care.
From as far back as 1925, many local residents and visitors have become supporters of this unique Arboretum.
This loyal community base has helped protect the Arboretum, for example, when Council policy makers in 1975 wanted to rezone the Arboretum for sport. Over decades, the community has invested hundreds of hours of voluntary work into improving the Arboretum.
After more than half a century of being managed ‘as a park’, Sherwood Arboretum really ‘turned over a new leaf’ during the 90th anniversary year in 2015.
Three generations of the Arvier family planted a Queensland Bottle Tree in 2015 to honour FOSA foundation member, Maurie Arvier.
Maurie put his botany skills to great use adding many name tags to specimen trees in the 1970s and 1980s.
“As a kid, I had some great times with my grandparents in Sherwood Arboretum. I became a Life Member, because it’s such a special place.”
