Forest Red Gum
Eucalyptus tereticornis
This medium to large tree, growing on river banks and open alluvial flats from eastern Victoria to Papua New Guinea, is distinguished by its steeply ascending branches and white to grey bark that is shed in irregular patches or strips.
The tree usually has a straight trunk and an open crown, the bark at the base of the trunk is rough and dark grey, leaves are up to 20 cm long, narrow and uniform in colour on both sides. The wood is red, hard, strong and durable and was widely used for heavy construction, railway sleepers, jetty piles, poles and posts.
