Stepping into Spring!

Here’s an opportunity to put a spring in your step – an inviting new arbor pathway at Brisbane’s only Botanic Garden for Australian native trees.

Brisbane Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner and students of Sherwood State School recently put the finishing touches to the first stage of Council’s new entry pathway project at Sherwood Arboretum on National Tree Day.

The Lord Mayor and students planted a Silver Ash, one of ten outstanding specimen trees chosen by Brisbane Botanic Gardens for the pathway, which leads from Jolimont Street to the riverside boardwalk.

This impressive rainforest tree, growing to a height of 36m in Papua-New Guinea and from Cape York to northern New South Wales, is noted for its sprays of honey-scented white flowers in summer.

The Friends of Sherwood Arboretum (FOSA) is keen to see the pathway showcase even more of Australia’s stunning native trees, providing much-needed summer shade for visitors.

Established in 1986, National Tree Day has become one of Australia’s largest tree planting and nature care events.

Sherwood State School joined more than 3000 Australian schools which participated in a wide range of activities from tree planting to bush tucker gardens and habitat projects for native wildlife.

National Tree Day has special significance for Sherwood Arboretum, according to FOSA.

The day is a timely reminder that as humans, we rely on trees to absorb carbon dioxide, a greenhouse gas which contributes to climate change, and return oxygen to our atmosphere.

While trees can survive without us, it is certainly true that we cannot survive without trees.

You can discover some of the Arboretum’s spectacular trees by calling Brisbane Botanic Gardens on 3403 2535 during office hours and secure your place for this free guided walk at 9.30 am on Saturday 24 September.
