Queensland Kauri Pine

Agathis robusta

This large, stately conifer tree is found in the rainforests of two small areas of coastal Australia, Fraser Island and adjacent coast, and far north Queensland.

The Queensland Kauri is recognised by its straight trunk, smooth grey bark and a dense crown of flat green leaves, tapering at each end. This spectacular conifer was mostly logged out because of popular uses such as cabinet making and boat building. The Greek name Agathis, meaning a coil of thread, describes the appearance of the seed-filled cones. The iconic Queensland Kauri avenue was planted to celebrate the Arboretum’s opening on 21 March 1925.

The Queensland Kauri seeds are a favourite food of the Sulphur-crested Cockatoo.
